Fayette County, population around 1,705. Perryopolis was laid out in 1814 on land George Washington claimed, which is why the streets fan out from a central diamond instead of sitting on a grid.
Fayette County, population around 1,024. The I-70 bridge over the Monongahela lands here, which is why Belle Vernon calls itself the gateway to Fayette County and why most of the retail is actually over the line in Rostraver and North Belle Vernon.
Westmoreland County, population around 6,876. Douglas Education Center is here, which runs Tom Savini's special make-up effects program and pulls students in from across the country. The Cleveland-Cliffs coke plant is the other large employer.
Washington County, population around 4,234. McKean Avenue is one of the few genuinely intact downtown business districts left in the valley, and Charleroi is one of the few towns here that grew between 2010 and 2020.
Washington County, population around 4,149. The Monongahela Main Street Program is an accredited Pennsylvania Downtown Center organization, re-accredited in April 2025. That is the most developed downtown programme of any small town in this valley.
Washington County, population around 4,569. The Donora Smog Museum commemorates the 1948 smog that killed around twenty people and drove the first federal clean air legislation. Its tagline is that clean air started here.
Washington County, population around about 5,400. PennWest California is here, the only university campus on this list. Enrolment fell from 2,717 students in autumn 2024 to 2,493 in autumn 2025, which storefronts here feel directly.
Fayette County, population around 2,185. Dunlap's Creek Bridge, built in 1839, is the oldest cast iron bridge still standing and still carrying traffic anywhere in the United States. The National Road runs through.
Westmoreland County, population around 2,665. West Newton is the founding case study for the Trail Town model. The Progress Fund still publishes the West Newton Story as its founding example of trail-based small town development.
Fayette County, population around 9,984. WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital is the largest employer not just in the city but in all of Fayette County, and three higher education campuses operate here.
Westmoreland County, population around 4,430. The Geyer Performing Arts Center opened as an opera house in 1900 and still runs as a theatre, and the Scottdale Fall Festival has gone every year since 1973.
Fayette County, population around 7,031. Connellsville is one of only ten Pennsylvania Trail Towns on the Great Allegheny Passage, and the Youghiogheny River Trail runs straight through the city.
Westmoreland County, population around 4,245. The Glass and Ethnic Festival is recognised as a Local Legacy in the Library of Congress, and the town runs a formal Business District Authority, which none of the other boroughs here have.
Westmoreland County, population around 14,976. Greensburg is the real regional commercial centre for the Laurel Highlands, with Seton Hill and Pitt-Greensburg both here and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art downtown.
Washington County, population around 13,176. Washington sits at the I-70 and I-79 junction, the busiest crossroads on this list, with Washington and Jefferson College downtown and the Wild Things playing at EQT Park just outside the city.
